Closing April 1st

With a heavy heart, I am announcing that Dark Matter Makeup will be closing April 1st. This is not a permanent closure. It will be an extended hiatus. Unfortunately, I am unsure when I plan to reopen, though I can say that it will most likely be several months.

Thank you everyone for your support throughout my journey. I look forward to reopening again in the future.

Lipsaber Packaging Update

Lipsabers may be going under a possible packaging update within the next few weeks. The new tubes are thick wall square tubes. Unfortunately, the new tubes will no longer have the lipsaber sticker, but instead have the "D" square logo sticker. I'm not 100% sure of this change yet, but it's leaning towards the change. Though taking away the original sticker decal will make the packaging not as unique, I feel like the higher quality tube will be more advantageous in the long run.

I'll be posting some pictures of the updated tubes in the near future.

Small Update

The Mini Cluster 0.1, Into The Deep, will be added to my shop tomorrow. There are 5 new eyeshadow colors, 2 new lipstick colors, and 1 new highlighter. The current swatches are a bit off and will be updated when I have a nice, clear sky to take photos in. Thus, I'm extending the Black Friday - Cyber Monday discount codes until the end of the week.

This will be the last set of new items for the remainder of the year. I have felt burnt out for a while and haven't had the motivation or energy to work on any new projects. Unfortunately, new creations will have to be put on pause until I can feel better. I'm very sorry. I hope that I'll be able to get back into the swing of things early next year. As of right now, I'm focusing into getting myself back into tip top shape. I'm not sure how long it will take, but I hope that you will bear with me. Thank you everyone for your support and patronage.

Black Friday + Cyber Monday Sale

It's that time of year again! The sales have begun!

This year, you can choose from two promotions:

-Use promo code CYBERBLACK to receive 25% off of your order

or

-Use promo code FREESHIP to receive free shipping on your order, including international orders.

Promo codes will be good from November 26th to December 1st.

I have some other semi-related announcements. Into The Deep colors will be available on Cyber Monday as well as a restocking of Aurora Borealis. Lipsabers will also be back in stock during this time, though they are currently on backorder and will ship as soon as the lipgloss tubes arrive.

Aurora Borealis Formulation Update

So, I have some good and bad news. Good news is that my jar supplier has finally caught up with their manufacturing (after several months!) and I can now order my jars without issue. Bad news is that one of my pigment suppliers has decided to temporarily close without notice, contact information, or estimated reopening time. So I have no idea when they will re-open, if they even plan to. Unfortunately, they were the ones who supplied most of the raw pigments used in Aurora Borealis. Because I have no idea when I'll be able to order more from them, I have found substitutes for the original pigments that I can no longer obtain.

In short, I've reformulated Aurora Borealis using the new pigments. I've recreated it as close as possible, but there are very, very small differences. The gold tone is a tad bit stronger and the violet tone is a little less red. If you've never tried Aurora Borealis, there really wouldn't be much of an issue. But for those who have tried the original, the new version is very close.

Thank you again for your patience!

Job Change Notice

Because this will be impacting my shop, I wanted to make the announcement official. I got a new full-time job.

Previously, I've always had part-time jobs that allowed me a lot of free time to work on my shop. Unfortunately, the part-time jobs and the income from my shop were not enough to financially support myself. Thus, I searched and was able to find a good full-time job in order to be able to have a stable amount of money coming in each month. My new job is a standard 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday type of job. I just started earlier this week and so far I'm really enjoying it there.

Now that I have most of my weekdays occupied, I don't have as much time as I did before where I could work on new shop projects. Turn around time has been changed. Previously, I got most orders out within 1 to 3 days. The new TAT is roughly 2 to 4 business days. I will still answer all of my Etsy conversations and emails as promptly as possible. The last major thing that will be changing are the time frames for new releases. New colors won't be premiering as often as they have been in the past. At this point in time I'm not sure if I plan to release new items in clusters like I have been, or release two or so colors a little more frequently.

I'm very sorry if this has caused any inconvenience and I hope that you will continue to support me as I try to adjust my scheduling around the new changes in my life.

Highlighter Backorder Notice

I was able to get into contact with my supplier to manufactures the jars that I use for my highlighters. Unfortunately, they told me that the expected completion and ship date for those jars are 9/2. /headdesk

I've been trying to find a similar jar, but I haven't been able to find one with a turn lock sifter that I prefer for the jars. It keeps the product from leaking especially if one chooses to carry it around with them.

Initially I wasn't going to add the latest additions into my shop until they could all be available in full sizes. But I've decided not to wait for the powder jars. Unfortunately, this means that the Aurora Borealis and Bioluminescence Highlighters will not be available in full size jars. They'll instead be available as samples for the time being.

I plan on having the new collection up here in a few days. I'll make another post with the official launch date once it's been finalized.

Out Of Stock Notice

I have a few items that will be going out of stock soon which includes the LipSabers, Gravity, and Aurora Borealis Highlighter. The containers for my lip creams and highlighters are currently on backorder from my supplier. I'm not sure when they will be restocked. My supplier usually restocks backordered items within a week or two so I hope that they will be available again quickly. I apologize for the inconvenience and I hope that I can get my shop restocked soon.

Mid June General Update

Are you ready kids?!

Aye, aye, Captain!

It's update time!

I'm still working on the Into The Deep Collection, which I hope to have up by the beginning of July. It's my first collection that will feature several product types together. I haven't finalized this idea yet, but I am considering offering a pocket sample pack for this collection. Instead of (or perhaps in addition to) having the eyeshadows available for purchase as a sample set, I may decide to offer sample sizes of all of the products in a pocket/travel tin. The Pocket Pack will contain the standard test tube eyeshadow samples, mini tubes of liquid lipstick, and a mini jar of highlighter. The cost of the Pocket Pack Sampler would be higher than the normal sampler price, though it would include samples of all of the new products. Like I said before, I've not made the final decision on this option. But what I think I will do is to initially offer only a few sets to see how well they do. If they lift off, I'll probably add them to the permanent selection of sample sets.

Speaking of travel tins, I'm also planning to offer travel tins for my full sized eyeshadows. The tins fit four full sized vials perfectly easy transport. I plan on having the tins be a free add-on when you purchase four or more full sized eyeshadows. They will also be available for individual purchase (for about $1.50 or so).

Lastly, I'm currently in development for a new product: Lipsaber Celestial Top Coats. Celestial Top Coats go on clear but have a color shifting effect. The idea is to be able to wear them alone or over lip color to create your own duochrome. I'm not sure if these will premier with the Into The Deep Collection or a short time after as its own release.

That's it for the Mid June updates, I'll be adding additional small updates whenever it fits. Stay tuned!

Health Update 3

I think this might be my final health update. No, I'm not dying, but I'm actually getting better! I think I'm back to about 80%. Initially, I thought my condition would be over within a few days but it turned out to be a little more complicated than I had imagined. I'm still not back to normal, but I've been able to eat better lately though I still have difficulty eating some foods. My nausea has always been awful, not just recently, but it has eased up a bit since this whole ordeal began.  I've also regained a lot of my energy, which allows me to be more productive in respect to developing new products.

As far as new products go, I've been testing out pressed eyeshadows. The texture still isn't quite right and some colors don't seem to press very well. At this current state, I have not decided whether pressed eyeshadows will be a future addition. If it is, pressed versions may only be available in some colors. Unfortunately, a pressed version would also be significantly higher in price due to the increased cost of supplies/materials and the additional production time/effort. I'm estimating a price set around $10 for a pressed version if this comes into fruitation.

If you follow any Etsy related news, you may have heard that Amazon is planning to open up their own Handmade Marketplace that some sources call the "Etsy Killer." As of this post, Amazon's proposed marketplace hasn't been released though small details are floating around in the handmade community. I do plan on opening a shop on Amazon's platform. Lately, Etsy has strayed far away from their original handmade movement which makes it hard for me to want to stay. I feel like they've taken a turn for the worse and the voices of the sellers who express legitimate concerns are being ignored and put onto the back burner. But I recognize that many customers enjoy shopping on Etsy which has decent features for shoppers. I know people will say, "Why not have a shop on both platforms?" I do plan on doing that for a while, especially to compare the platforms against each other. But being a one woman operation, I can get overwhelmed easily having to keep track of two platforms. If Amazon's marketplace offers a superior service for sellers, I will be moving shop there. I've also been considering hosting my own integrated shop here on my website, however the fees to do so are not proportionate to the amount of net revenue I currently make. When the time comes where I can make consistent sales and revenue, I will be opening a self hosted shop here permanently which would be the most ideal situation.

Health Update 2

About a week ago I made a post regarding my health. I can say now that I'm probably about 65% back to normal, though there is still that 35% that isn't doing very well. For the most part I'm still feeling fairly weak and without energy. I still try my best to get orders out within 48 hours, though I take a bit longer to respond to messages and package stuff up depending on how much strength I have at the time. I also have some samples that I promised to some lovely ladies that I've been behind on that I hope to get out by the end of the week.

The "Into The Deep" collection has been put on the back burner while I recover, though I have developed a new highlighter, "Bioluminescence," along with a new Lipsaber shade, " V. infernalis." I think I'll be adding at least another lip color as well as at least three new eyeshadow shades with this small collection.

Health Update

As some of you may know, I recently returned from my trip to Las Vegas. Unfortunately upon immediate return to Oklahoma City, I suddenly fell ill. It's not anything serious, but it has really kicked me in the butt these past few days making it hard for me to do much outside of trying to sleep. I hope to be back in tip top shape by the end of the week so I can get back to work on new products for you guys. I'm going to be working on pressed products next. If they turn out as planned, you can expect to see some pressed eyeshadows and perhaps a pressed version of Aurora Borealis in the shop in July. I'm also happy to announce the theme of the next cluster, "Into The Deep" which will feature new eyeshadows, lipsabers, and a new highlighter inspired by the strange and beautiful creatures found deep within our own planet.

Thank you for sticking with me and helping me grow. I look forward to working on new projects as soon as I am back to my normal state.

Mid May General Update

After tweaking with my formula and some very last minute updates, my Lipsaber lip cremes should be available in the shop before I head out on vacation. I have some basic photographs to take. I won't have lip swatches for a while until I can get some help with more talented photographers/swatchers.

I have some sample packaging on the way for me to test out before deciding on packaging decisions for future products. These include some pressed compacts, new tube applicators, and possibly some makeup brushes. I've placed a few orders with some makeup brush manufacturers to test out the quality. The brushes will be synthetic. If they are up to standard, I'll probably be adding them to my shop sometime this summer. I'm estimating the pricing to set between $5 to $15.

Anyways, that's all the news I have for now. Keep an eye out on my Etsy shop to catch the lipsabers once they have launched.

Sculpting Powder Update

If you've seen my Instagram (@darkmattermakeup) you may have seen swatches I have out for my new sculpting powder, Eclipse. Originally, I had planned Eclipse to launch mid May as a loose powder. However, I have decided to re-adjust the formulation to turn it into a pressed powder. I feel like the pressed version will be less messy and easier to work with than a loose powder. I plan to have the powder packaged into a round compact. But due to the cost of the compact, pressing materials, additional ingredients, and added work time I will have to charge more than I had originally intended. Right now, the price is set to be roughly $14 or $15. I'm also pushing the launch date into June, which would allow me ample time to test and formulate the pressed powder.

I'll continue to update the progress as new information comes by.

Dom Goes To Vegas!

From May 17th to May 20th, I will be away in Las Vegas!

I've been to Vegas before, but it was when I was 6 and really didn't know any better. I do remember that we stayed at the Circus Circus hotel where I spent most of my time watching the shows and playing carnival games. I distinctly remember a show were a woman balanced herself on a tall unicycle and proceeded to toss ceramic tea ware onto the top of her head. It was amazing! I don't remember much else.

This time, it was my father's idea to take the family to Las Vegas. It's somewhat of a Vietnamese stereotype to enjoy gambling, which my parents are planning to do while we're there. I'm not that fond of gambling, as I don't like taking risks when it comes to money. I might try a low bet slot machine or two while I'm there, but I plan not to spend more than $20 on it (doesn't everyone say something like this). My little brother and I will probably eat a lot and just walk around to see what's up. Though, I think I'm going to convince him to try gambling once since he seems to draw in all of the luck in the family.

So, any orders placed while I'm away will ship ASAP as soon as I get home. If you haven't already, you can follow me on Instagram @darkmattermakeup to see some of my Vegas photos.

A Shift In Direction

When I first started Dark Matter Makeup (a mere several months ago), I originally had the intention to specialize in eyeshadow. However, as I continue to grow my business, that is no longer a goal of mine.

I have decided that Dark Matter Makeup will be branching out to include other forms of cosmetics and skincare. I will definitely be expanding my lip line (lip products are my obsession!) including gloss and other products.

What I'm trying to say is that I am going to concentrate on launching a variety of products, hopefully monthly, instead of concentrating on launching new eyeshadow shades each month. New eyeshadows will still be in production, though longer than they were previously.

I want to thank everyone who has supported my business and dream thus far. I do hope that you'll continue to encourage me as I take the next step in my life.

Introducing 3 New Products!

Whoohoo! It's that time again. Time for new stuff! I'm happy to announce the addition of three new products to the Dark Matter line.

1. Morning Star - Natural Setting Spray

This natural spray not only sets makeup, but tones and soothes the skin. Ideal for all skin types. You can even store it in the refrigerator for an extra refreshing boost!

2. LipSaber - Cream Satin Lipstick

I've been working on this formula for months and I'm happy to announce that it is done! LipSaber is a rich creme liquid lipstick with a satin finish. I'll be launching four colors in the initial LipSaber launch cluster.

3. Eclipse - Sculpting Powder

Finally, a new sculpting powder will premier in May. Available in two shades (Solar and Lunar), this sculpting powder has a grey beige tint which mimics the natural shadows on our faces.

All of these products will be launching at the beginning of May! Check back to pick up some promo codes for bonus samples!

New Product Announcements + Updates!

May will not have a new cluster. I've been working on two new products to hopefully premier in May. One of them, I'm still struggling with the formulation in order to get it just right. I hope that I'll be able to finish everything in time for a May launch. I'll be dedicating my spare time to problem solving the issues I'm having with it.

But on a brighter note, the other product is coming along nicely! It is my new setting spray, Morning Star! Morning Star is made up of lavender water, giving it a refreshing lavender scent. It also has aloe vera, evening primrose extract, and chamomile extract. Not only does it help set makeup, but it doubles as a toner that aids in soothing the skin.

And finally, I'm currently debating adding a luxury face oil to my line. Specifically one that contains Bulgarian Rose Otto, which is one of the most expensive oils in the world. I'm hesitant about this because the pricing of this oil would be higher than my normal price range. But at the same time, I want my customers to be able to enjoy the rose otto.

A Day In The Life Of Dom

10:00am - 11:00am - This is typically when I wake up on a day in which I do not go to work (I also have a part time job). I usually wake up just a bit earlier, but I play around with my phone before actually getting out of bed.

11:00am - If I have orders to fulfill for the day, I usually get them ready first thing in the morning. During this time, I also catch up with my YouTube subscriptions (mainly Good Mythical Morning).

12:30pm - I usually head out around noon to drop off packages at the post office. I typically go to the post office only once a day. If an order is placed while I'm out or after I've returned, the order will ship out the next day. Likewise, if an order is placed before I head out, I will get it ready to go out that day.

01:30pm - I'm back home and usually spend this time doing internet stuff or taking a nap with the cats.

04:00pm - If I have any photographs to take for the day, this is usually around the time that I get those done.

06:00pm - After dinner, I usually prepare batches if there is a need for it. I try to knock out several batches at once since the actual process of making my products is my least favorite thing to do. If there aren't any batches that need to be prepared that day, I will occasionally use this time for various development activities. This includes formulating new shades and testing out potential formulas.

08:00pm - Finally, this is my wind down time. I either play video games, watch youtube videos, do more internet stuff, or everything all at once. I officially go to bed around 11:00pm or later, depending on how distracted I get.
